Advocacy
DISC’s Health Advocacy Service operates within the Easington and Sedgefield localities and is available to everyone aged 16 and over living within these areas. We can advocate for people who have no voice or who cannot speak up for themselves or even people who don’t have the knowledge or confidence to question the Health Care they are receiving. Our aim is to empower people to self-advocate or advocate on behalf of a friend or family member. Our Advocates inform clients of the options available to them and draw up a plan of action with them. Each decision made is made by the client and all actions performed by the Advocate are initiated by what the client requests.

We deal only with issues related to accessing Health Services / Health Care and have a fully comprehensive directory of other services we can work in partnership with to resolve separate issues including complaints which we do not advocate. We advocate for one issue at a time, however appreciating that health issues often create more than one issue, we will re-refer the same client for alternate issues as often as they need. Our aim is to resolve issues at the earliest and most informal opportunities therefore we work with clients for no longer than 4 months on each issue.

Referral Criteria:
Referrals can be made by professionals and we also accept self referrals, and this can be done by simply phoning our office (see below) or even calling into our office (see below).
