Paula Hood who has been volunteering at Bradford DIP since summer 2011 has recently been offered a Trainee Drug Worker Post in Leeds starting January 2012, well done Paula!
“I am really pleased and happy that DISC have offered me the opportunity to take up this post,” says Paula.
Having volunteered with the Bradford DIP team Paula has already shown her commitment and potential, shadowing other workers, experiencing court visits, one to one’s with service users, prison visits and delivering a ‘cook and eat’ demonstration at two Bradford service users events.
“Being able to get involved in the events was good fun as I love cooking” says Paula. “It was great that the service users really wanted to get involved in the session and took part.”
Paula previously worked in an advisory role at a building society, helping those struggling with their mortgage repayments to keep their homes. Although she enjoyed her job she always felt that there was more she could be doing to support those in need. Using some inheritance money she received she was able to quit her job and pursue another career helping others.
Having looked at further education options and volunteering possibilities Paula decided that volunteering would suit her best as it gave her the opportunity to help and support people straight away and offered her the chance of gaining some practical experience.
After searching through lots of different agencies and opportunities Paula chose to come and volunteer with DISC because it offered her the chance to gain experience in the career path she wanted to take.
“I chose DISC because I liked how the service users are at the very heart of everything that DISC do.”
“My time volunteering has been an interesting and useful experience and I’m glad I did it. I’m really excited to start my new role, it’s a great opportunity for me and a good way to start 2012.
