Horizon Durham Colleges Fresher’s Fairs

08/10/2012

Support workers from Horizon Young Adult carers project at DISC recently attended eight College Fresher’s Fairs across County Durham and are continuing to support the college’s students initially at Derwentside College with a fortnightly drop in service for YAC on site.

The fresher’s fairs helped to raise awareness across the College’s of County Durham of Horizon and also captured some new referrals. A questionnaire was used to identify carers and overall from the eight Colleges, 68 young people identified themselves as being in a caring role.

College’s visited included:

East Durham College

Derwentside College

Durham Sixth Form

Bishop Auckland College

New College Durham

Darlington College

Spennymoor College

Along with the student participation the project also made links with some other services that we could potentially work in partnership with including Tees, Esk and Wear Valley NHS, County Durham Sports, Health Trainers NHS and Consett One Point.

“The stand was set up within the refectory at Derwentside College and had various information leaflets and promotional materials for young people to take away” said Mark, Horizon’s Capacity Builder, “The Fresher’s Fairs have helped us raise awareness of the project and service we can offer to YAC across County Durham.”

The drop in service at Derwentside has already received its first referral and the Horizon’s service information has been included in the college’s student support hand book.
