Positioning Statement at DISC on Sustainable Development
In recent years, DISC has become increasingly aware of its ethical and environmental responsibilities.
Operating across the Northern Region, employing over 400 members of staff, and with a wide range of business partners and contacts, DISC also recognises its role as an influential body within the voluntary sector.
DISC hopes that, through its ethical and environmental focus, it can make a positive change upon its own environmental impact, as well as educate and influence others to follow its example. DISC recognises that climate change is a real threat to economic, environmental and social stability. There is increasing scientific consensus on the likely implications of climate change, and a compelling body of evidence to support the need for action now to reduce atmospheric concentrations of gases which give rise to climate change.
In developing a GREEN Sustainability Strategy, DISC is embracing the challenges of climate change. By reducing the organisation's production of greenhouse gases, our objectives are:-
- to avoid contributing to serious and irreversible damage to the planet’s ecosystems,
- to manage our business in the most environmentally friendly way possible,
- to educate and encourage others to follow suit.
- producing a Travel Policy incorporating a review of our Company Car Policy.
- researching video conferencing facilities and consider installing this across the business to reduce travel etc.
- implementing our newly developed companywide intranet to improve information storage systems and the ability to share information without meeting,
- using ethically sourced and fair trade products.
- implementing the ‘close the Loop’ recycling scheme within all the company offices to ensure effective recycling of all paper waste.
