Barnsley Recovery Steps supports World Cancer Day
The Barnsley Recovery Steps team helped raise awareness of World Cancer Day on Sunday 4th February by developing a display at The Factory, Dearne Enterprise Centre, Goldthorpe.
Working in partnership with Be Well Barnsley (also based at The Factory site), the aim of the event was to raise awareness about cancer in general as well as the link between excessive alcohol use and cancer, encouraging prevention, detection and treatment of the disease.
Every year, alcohol causes 4% of cancers in the UK, with excessive alcohol use linked to seven types of cancer including breast, mouth and bowel cancer.
Barnsley Recovery Steps staff members David Mann, James Pierce and Alan Stewart organised the display and handed out leaflets. Alan said “The information picked up by our clients prompted plenty of discussion. Clients said they had associated alcohol misuse with liver and heart disease but they hadn’t thought of the links with cancer.”
